Beyonce: Mercury, Symbolism, and Messages from the Divine

Following Beyonce’s immaculately divine performance on the 2017 Grammy Awards Show last night, I felt like I had witnessed a ritual of divine worship. I was entranced. The symbolism was POWERFUL!

Beyonce as the Black Madonna - @PeoplesOracle

Between Lemonade and her embodiment of the Goddess in her pregnancy photos (scroll down for the images) it has become clear to me that she has nurtured a deep connection with the Divine. The symbolism of Oshun, and now the Black Madonna, dominates the imagery and symbolism of her artistry and self expression.

It’s no coincidence the Beyonce uses such strong and storied spiritual symbolism in her art. Mercury is a fascinating planet, rich in mythological and astrological symbolism that dominates her natal chart.

Mercury in Astrology

Last week on Twitter, I spent time talking about how underrated Mercury is in astrology. It’s not feared like Saturn, adored like Venus, or venerated like the Moon and the Sun.

Mercury is not the mind itself. The Sun is the mind. The mind (SUN) cannot be directly perceived. It must be processed and brought down to earth. Mercury is the messenger that delivers the perception of the Sun. And if the Sun is pure perception, Mercury (as well as the Moon, for other observable reasons) filters and translates that perception.

Without Mercury there is no language, no symbols nor their translation. There is no magic—no deliverance of the Will of the Divine to humans.

Mercury, Ruler of Virgo the Virgin

Virgo is the 6th sign of the zodiac. It is a mutable/common earth sign ruled by the planet Mercury. Virgo translated from Latin means virgin. There is the chaste virgin who is sexually inexperienced. And there is the virgin who is unmarried, owned by no man.

Ultimately, in the west, the virgin is symbolised most visibly by Mary, mother of Jesus, who is said to have divinely conceived her son. Her depictions and iconography are found far and wide from far eastern Europe in Lithuania where she is Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, to Cuba where she is Our Lady of Regla.

In Orthodox Christianity Mary is seen as mediator—as Mediatrix in the Roman Catholic church—literally bringing heaven down to Earth through her womb and the birth of the Christ. And Mercury, syncretized with the Greek Hermes, was the messenger of the gods and was often tasked with bringing messages from on high down to humans.

These two symbols are syncretized into Virgo, the Virgin, ruled by the planet Mercury.

Beyonce & Spiritual Symbolism

Sunrise Birth Chart for Beyonce - @PeoplesOracle
I’m using a sunrise chart because there is no verified or reliable birth time available. Some use a noon chart when there is no birth time, but this works fine for the purpose it’s serving.

I present to you a sidereal sunrise birth chart for Beyonce.

In Beyonce’s birth chart, we can see the importance and dominance of Mercury as manifested in 4 strongly placed planets in Virgo. Mercury rules the bunch and is in his own sign. Venus is there in the sign of her fall, Jupiter in the sign of his detriment, and Saturn is peregrine. Jupiter is how we view the world based on our experiences. Saturn is our teacher, enforcer of limitations, and the one that rewards our persistence over time.

As I mentioned before, Mercury is not just communication or someone who sends messages. The symbolism and stories of Mercury/Hermes, though surely not original, has been syncretized with or represented in almost every world religion. He translates divine messages using oracles like astrology, tarot, runes, shells, bones, and language like scripture, sutras, art, symbols, poetry, etc.

Mercury also escorted the souls of the deceased to the after life. He had dominion over the transitions of life. Embodied in Virgo, Mercury brings us the birth of the Sun by ushering us through Libra, Sagittarius, and then Capricorn where the Sun ultimately dies and rises on the 3rd day at the winter solstice.

Venus is the most interesting to me. What does it mean for Venus to have to answer to Mercury? On a mundane level, it means that Venus is subservient to the need for precision and accuracy. Mercury is calculative, weighing and measuring is used as means for accuracy. So, Venus the planet of pleasure and love, but also art and creativity, is expressed with forethought, planning, and with the precision of calculations.

If you’ve seen Beyonce perform or talk about her craft then you’ve witnessed accuracy and precision in every aspect of her presentation. From the amount of time it took her to walk through length of the runway after a song on her Formation World Tour, to the foresight necessary to execute legendary song releases; there is calculation, precision, and accuracy that is unmatched by any of her contemporaries.

On a symbolic level, Venus in Virgo, answering to Mercury, manifests as a woman who is devoted to craftsmanship as an expression of her divine calling. Beyonce has evolved into the symbol of the self-possessed woman. And her devotion to her craft has culminated in her channeling and expressing her experiences through divine symbols. It is a testament to the strong reflection Mercury makes of her life.

In the same way that Mary, the Virgin of mythological lore, was impregnated and thrust into a special relationship with the divine, Beyonce has shown us and told us that pregnancy and motherhood is the thing that has illuminated purpose in her life. And in her celebration of fecundity, pregnancy, and motherhood, she has opened another door on her path of divine exploration and communication.

The iconography of Oshun, The Black Madonna, and Yemaya as seen in Lemonade, her recent pregnancy photoshoot, and her grammy performance is no accident. One doesn’t happen upon those symbols and that knowledge. One is drawn to them, compelled to know what they are, and called to study their meaning and relevance in one’s life.

I can speculate about how Beyonce knows about this stuff, but I don’t think it matters. What’s clear is that her art intentionally invokes and conjures powerful divine expressions of goddesses, orisha, and saints that clearly resonate with her and her spiritual journey. Her artistry embodies the symbolism of Mercury in a way that breathes depth into the ways in which one can understanding that planet.
